Some people are firmly cat people or dog people. In our family we are equal opportunity pet lovers!
We love a happy ending, so we adopted our dog, Stormy, from a local shelter. A year later, our cat Millie was selected from the same shelter. After an adjustment period, these two girls became besties.
And then there’s Bo.
Bo is kind of a jerk. He’s the cranky old man of the family.
He was a rescue in the truest sense. Found him as a tiny kitten at a park and my oldest son insisted we bring him home. He looks just like Millie, so he thought it was a sign.
The ladies did not take well to this rambunctious young man initially but eventually a peace was established. Until the Power Play.
I walked into my bedroom recently to this sight:
I tried washing the cushion and locking the cat out during the day. No dice. Stormy refused to set foot on her bed.
Well, this won’t do. That girl needs something special. We decided to treat her to a homemade blanket of her very own to show her how much we love her. But, my sewing skills are non-existent. Thank goodness for a no-sew fleece blanket option!
But First, Treats
On the way to the fabric store, we made a stop by our local Kroger. We’re not hosting Thanksgiving this year, but we are committed to bringing a few dishes. While shopping for our holiday meal supplies, we hit up the pet supply aisle.
The holidays are a time to treat everyone in the house! Kroger makes that easy with a well-stocked pet product aisle. Lucky aisle 13 is always a stop on our Kroger runs!
We started with Stormy by picking out a bag of Purina Beneful dry dog food. It’s been reformulated (after some feedback from customers!) so that meat is the #1 ingredient on the list. That makes Stormy happy. There’s also no sugar added. That makes me happy.
But dinner wasn’t enough. Our Stormy girl needs some treats! She agrees with the rest of us that everything is better with bacon. Beggin’ Strips smell and taste like bacon because they’re made with real bacon! No more puppy dog eyes at the breakfast table. She gets her own.
Can’t leave the kitties out. They love treats and I couldn’t resist something with “party” in the title. Friskies Party Mix is full of crunchy treats that come in a bunch of different flavors! We picked out the beachside mix for our felines.
Holiday supplies and special treats secured, we moved on to get supplies for Stormy’s blanket!
DIY No-Sew Fleece Blanket
Lay both fleece pieces on top of each other and trim them to the same size.
Cut a 5 inch square in each corner. Don’t stress about perfection here – Man’s Best Friend isn’t going to judge you too hard.
Cut slits in the fabric along the edges. They should be cut as deep as the square you cut out, so about 5 inches long. Width should be approximately 1.5 inches.
Tie those knots! I employed my teens to help out. These knots are simple ones, and the fringe is double knotted so it will hold up better.
Smooth out the blanket a bit. It might look a little bunchy, but the great thing about fleece is that it has a little stretch and give to it.
Our puppy dog loves her new no-sew fleece blanket! She likes to be near my desk while I work which is conveniently located next to the front window so she can watch the world go by. And she just might earn some of those Beggin’ Strips if she stops barking at the delivery truck when I tell her to!
