I’m sitting at my computer, typing this out in front of the glow of our newly decorated Christmas tree. When I was a kid, our tree remained bare until Christmas Eve. We each put on one ornament, our personal favorite, and then went to bed. Santa Claus took care of the rest. It left quite an impression on Christmas morning! I suggested this to my husband when we married. Wisely, he nixed that sentimental idea. What a lot of work that would be for already exhausted parents on Christmas Eve! Hats off to you, Mom and Dad!
My husband, three boys and I usually try to find our favorite ornaments to put on our tree first. It’s a special tradition to dig through all of them, looking for each person’s favorite. I obtained mine years ago, when my now-teenagers were small. I’ve always preferred silver to gold, and this ornament stood out to me. It depicts Santa Claus kneeling in front of the manger, showing deference to the Christ child.
It struck me immediately. As a new mom, you are always trying to figure out ways to be a good model to your kids. We can get caught up in all that glitters about Christmas – getting that perfect family photo, getting the hot toys that your child wants, decorating the house just so. That ornament was a stark reminder that while there is certainly a place for Santa in our Christmas celebrations, he should not be our focus. I love that visual reminder that I can pass on to my children every time I search for that ornament to place on the tree first.
I chose this charm from James Avery because it’s more than just jewelry to me. It’s reminiscent of my favorite ornament and its message. It doesn’t depict Santa, but this is still a reminder of “the reason for the season” that I can wear year-round. The James Avery charm is beautiful in its simplicity, and that reminds me of exactly how Jesus came to be among us.
